Epic Games is looking for experienced Environment Artists to work in our Cary, NC studio.  Our Environment Artists are highly talented, creative, and versatile individuals who build the aesthetically groundbreaking and technically advanced environments used in our games.

The person in this role will be responsible for the following:

  • Building solid gameplay environments and assets for 3D games;

  • Using Unreal Engine to create 3D assets and environments based on basic game designs and concept art;

  • Defining environment metrics used to create the majority of environment art which are essential for artists and animators on the development team;

  • Composing and texturing assets, terrains, architectures, and level art;

  • Creating contextual backgrounds and scenery for games including architectural elements and physical objects that are stylistically consistent;

  • Establishing parameters to ensure that when the player interacts with game objects, the interaction is believable and in line with player expectations;

  • Creating shaders for environment assets, volumetrics, decals, ambient effects, etc.;

  • Optimizing geometry so that the level runs at a manageable frame rate while minimizing loss of visual fidelity across the game world;

  • Using 3D art tools, such as Max, Maya, Zbrush or Lightwave for 3D asset creation and refinement;

  • Utilizing expert knowledge of 2D art tools, such as Adobe Photoshop to refine art assets and elements;

  • Leveraging real-time data and player feedback to adjust tuning and maximize player engagement; and

  • Using scan data collected through the process of photogrammetry to enhance visual quality of assets and speed up the production process.

The ideal candidate will meet the qualifications below:

  • Bachelor of Arts degree from an accredited university in the U.S., or its foreign equivalent in Animation, Game Art, Digital Arts, Interactive Media, or related degree and 2 years of professional experience in the video game industry building solid gameplay environments and assets and scripting scenarios for 3D games;

  • At least 2 shipped titles which exhibit AAA game quality art;

  • At least 1 year of experience working with AAA game engine technology to create art assets;

  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills;

At least 2 years of professional experience in the following:

  • Using Maya, Max, Zbrush or Lightwave for 3D asset creation and refinement;

  • Using 2D art tools such as Adobe Photoshop for art asset and element refinement;

  • Modeling clean, seamless models from concept art using  high-poly modelling and sculpting techniques;

  • Building 3D worlds using 3D assets, geometry manipulation, particle effects, texturing, and environment beautification;

  • Practicing modularity and asset instancing in video game development.

To qualify applicants must demonstrate 3D asset and environment creation skills by submitting a portfolio which shows high quality, high-poly environments, characters, or vehicles with a strong sense of detailing.  The portfolio must also show light, post process, and cohesive full scene constructions skills.

To qualify applicants must complete Epic’s Environment Art exercise to demonstrate proficiency. Candidates must pass background and reference check.  Multiple openings for this position.
